Volunteer FAQ

How do I sign up to build?

You can sign up to build right here on our website! Visit our Calendar of Events and click on the build day you would like to sign-up for. Follow the prompts to register for that build day. If you have any trouble signing up for a build day please contact our Volunteer Chair. You can also sign up to build at any of our monthly social events.

Do I need construction experience to build with HYP?

No! Everyone is welcome to build with HYP. Habitat for Humanity of Dane County provides a construction leader to help you throughout the day. We only ask that you come with positive attitude and willingness to learn.

Do I need to bring my own tools to the build sites?

All of the tools that you need will be provided. However, you may bring your own hand tools if you wish. HYP and Habitat for Humanity of Dane County assume no liability for lost or damaged items.

What should I wear to a build day?

We encourage volunteers to dress in layers. Please wear clothing that can get dirty, stained, etc. Heavy footwear is recommended. Closed toed shoes must be worn. No open-toed or high-heeled shoes are permitted.

Do I need to bring a lunch?

Lunch is not provided on build days so volunteers are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch.  Coffee and water are available on the build site and a 30 minute lunch break will be scheduled in the middle of the day.

What should I do if there is bad weather on the day I am scheduled to build?

HYP will make every effort to notify you in advance of any cancellations. To check for weather cancellations the day of a build, please call the Habitat for Humanity Weather line at 608-255-1549 ext 211. The weather line will be updated by 7:30am of each build day.

I signed up to build, but now I can't make it. What do I do?

It is important that we fill every build day. Please let us know as soon as you learn you will be unable to build by contacting our Volunteer Chair.
